Big news, big move

So, my news. My non-baby-in-the-belly-news. It's life altering, I mean, it alters our life, alters it by about 1000 miles! We're moving! To Kansas City, my old hometown.

We decided to do it 10 days ago and since then it's been a whirlwind. Planning, freecycling, looking at houses online...oh, and did i mention that 7 days after we decided to move we accepted a contract on our house? Yep, didn't even put it on the market and it's under contract (a friend is buying it). We have a month to get it spruced up and 2 months to get out. That means by mid July we'll be in KC.

It's pretty excellent for us. We'll be in a much bigger house, able to house us all plus one more, we'll finally be debt free, we'll be near my wonderful mom and pop, and K will be able to finish his degree at a school he really likes.

Here's our current issue -- do we get a house in the city, walking distance to everything (libraries, plaza, galleries, food, UMKC -where Kitten will be finishing his degree) but with a tiny yard, or do we get a house 20 minutes from the city but with 3-5 acres? Both scenerios are available, both are big enough, both are the same price? We go back and forth...

With me it's ALWAYS about the acres. Always. I know what you mean though, kids want stuff in town when they are older...but for now they would LOVE the acres. Just my two penn'orth :-) Good luck with the move

The one with the acres!

So sorry you'll be going Jacey-- but happy for the many good things it will bring your way. Our experience between the two scenarios you mentioned is that while it was such great fun and convenient to be a part of the Urban Scene/culture with family, it is incomparable to seeing our kids growing up running around a bigger green space of their very own. Making hidey-holes/forts and fairie houses that get to stay put and evolve. Camping in the yard. Climbing and loving their own trees. Watching nature and gardening right outside their door, and lastly-- acres equals SHEEP or other yarn animals. Right??!! :) While I know one could well-argue that all of that is possible in the city ( aside from the sheep maybe)-- it's just different.... For us at least. All mileages vary. You know your kids and family... where will they bloom best? :) You'll make good magic wherever you decide. Take care! I hope I get to take a class with you before you go!! Will you post or email me your schedule? I'll be reading and listening to you!

Delurkin' ;-)
I don't know you, so ignore me if this doesn't apply...but for me, I can to lots of acres (grew up in the mountains), and I can do lots of city (have lived in SF)...I just don't tolerate suburbia too well. Both of those options sound fantastic.
Even though acres are great, having everything local is one of my favorite things (and parks ease my need for space). The thing I'd really think about if I was in your shoe(s) is the family time (and transportation $) lost while Kitten is commuting to and from school. Time is a valuable thing!
Happy packing!

well, i'm sure you know this, but the only reason we don't adore our acres is that they happen to be 3000 miles away from our entire family. there were many things we enjoyed about life in the city...proximity to just about everything being a huge bonus, BUT nothing compares to the experience our son is having with living out here on a few modest acres...runnin through the pasture and gardening and having the space and freedom to discover so much about the natural world on a daily basis. i hate the driving...but with most of our food coming out of our garden this summer, we won't be doing so much of that.
Very exciting news, J. It sounds like a great move for you and your family. *hugs*

I think of you guys as being pretty urban. Or maybe I'm just projecting because our suburban-ish existence is slowly making me just a little bit cra-a-a-a-zy;)

Still, the price of gas isn't going to come down anytime soon (ever?) and living walking distance to school will ensure the ever important family time doesn't diminish too terribly. Plus there are city yards and there are city yards, you know? Even on a fifth of an acre lot you can have a veggie patch and a place to make mudpies, etc.

Best luck with the move!!!!

Through the lense of peak oil, go for the land. Life is changing, things are going to become more and more out of reach for ordinary people. If you have land, you have some security for your food source. The rest of the fun stuff will still happen but with that bit of security underlining things.

Besides, do you want to reign those little bodies into that small yard? Having grown up on 60 acres of adventure myself I can't imagine.

Congratulations! Have fun and enjoy the journey.

It's the LAND, Katie Scarlett, the LAND!!!!

Congratulations!

That would be a tough decision for me as well. I like to be close to everything but then I also really like having my space. In the end, I think I'd go for the acreage because I love animals so much, but would only have limited space for them. I know that may not be a concern for you but for me, that would be the deciding factor, I'd get the acreage so I could have more dogs.

Hey! That's where I live! :D

Good luck with your house hunting! City or suburbs just depends on what sort of atmosphere you want, I suppose. And even then, it really depends on what part of the city you move to.

COngrats! We will definitely miss having you in these parts - but I wish you all the luck in the world in your new home! As for country or city - I'm a country girl at heart - so I'd be all about the acreage, but then again - walking distance to everything sounds pretty cool too!

Uh....*sniff again*

But seriously, it will be great for you all.

Walk to town without a doubt. You can always find open space. It is so nice when you can walk to everything. You don't spend all your time in the car getting someplace (or nowhere).
Peace~

Well, here in Britain you only get 3-5 acres if you're extremely wealthy. But, with three kids, we went for a large garden (by normal, not wealthy, British standards) and a 20-minute commute, and it was the right decision. Culture is great, but you only want it at certain times! Your family will do its actual living in the house and garden. Go for it! Very exciting news.

*cries*

go for the acres, that way there's room for that yurt m & I always talking about, you know, for when the revolution comes.

*goes back to crying*

I am SO disappointed that you're leaving Baltimore- but I get it, and congratulations! Wonderful news.

(And hey... while I'm commenting... any info on the podcast? I need my fix!!)

My friend told me today that you are moving to Missouri. Personally, I'd go for the acreage. I live on 3 wooded acres in my little area of MO and I have everything I need within a 5 mile radius so gas isn't a problem for me. But if you're concerned with the rising cost of gas, suburbs it is(unless you find a place like mine). You can always move later if you don't like it.

I hope your planning on teaching your spinning classes here in Missouri. I'm there if you are! By the way, my maiden name was Boggs. You don't hear that name too often!

I live on nearly 4 acres in suburban KC North. So we've got the best of both worlds I think. Close to shopping, LOTS of room for the dog to really, truly run and the grandkids love it. If you've got a dog that likes/needs to run, there's nothing like acreage. Leash laws in KC proper.
